At what height do roofers need fall protection?

In construction, OSHA requires fall protection for roofing work at 6 feet or more above a lower level (29 CFR 1926.501). This applies to both low-slope and steep-slope roofs, using guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall arrest systems.

What is the difference between low-slope and steep-slope roofing rules?

Low-slope roofs (4:12 pitch or less) allow options such as guardrails, warning lines with a safety monitor, or fall arrest. Steep-slope roofs generally require guardrails with toe boards or a personal fall arrest system, because warning lines alone are not sufficient on a pitch that sheds footing.

Do skylights count as fall hazards on a roof?

Yes. Skylights and roof openings are treated as holes that require covers, guardrails, or fall arrest. An uncovered or unmarked skylight is a hidden hazard that has caused many fatal falls, so it must be secured with a labeled, load-rated cover or guarded.

Can a safety monitor replace fall protection on a roof?

A safety monitoring system is only permitted on low-slope roofs, usually in combination with a warning line, and never on steep slopes. It is the weakest option and does not physically stop a fall, so guardrails or fall arrest are strongly preferred.
