At what height does OSHA require fall protection on a roof?

In construction, OSHA requires fall protection at 6 feet or more above a lower level (29 CFR 1926.501). General industry uses a 4-foot trigger. Any unprotected roof edge at or above these heights must be guarded, netted, or protected with a personal fall arrest system.

A compliant guardrail has a top rail 42 inches high (plus or minus 3 inches), a mid-rail roughly halfway, and can withstand a 200-pound force applied downward or outward on the top rail without failing or dropping below 39 inches.

Can I use a warning line instead of a guardrail?

Warning lines are only permitted on low-slope roofs and must be set at least 6 feet from the edge (15 feet for some mechanical work), combined with a safety monitor or a controlled access zone. They do not replace guardrails where workers are within 6 feet of the edge.
