Dozers, loaders, haul trucks, and excavators all have large blind spots where an operator simply cannot see a worker on foot. Backovers and swing-radius strikes kill dozens of construction workers every year, often in seconds and without a sound the operator can hear over the engine. How big are heavy-equipment blind spots?

They are far larger than most people expect. A large haul truck can have a blind zone of roughly 30 feet directly behind it, and excavators, loaders, and dozers all have areas around the rear and sides where the operator cannot see a worker on foot at all.

When does OSHA require a spotter for backing equipment?

Under 29 CFR 1926.601, a vehicle with an obstructed rear view must have either a working reverse-signal alarm or an observer (spotter) signaling that it is safe to back. Best practice on active sites is to use both, plus an internal traffic-control plan.

What is the swing radius hazard on an excavator?

As an excavator rotates, its counterweight swings out behind the cab and can crush a worker standing close to the machine, even when the bucket is elsewhere. Workers must stay outside the full swing radius, which should be barricaded as an exclusion zone.
