Scaffold Access Violations Put Workers One Wrong Step From a Fall

Scaffolds are only as safe as the way workers get on and off them. Can workers climb scaffold cross-braces to get up?

No. OSHA prohibits using cross-braces as a means of access because they are not designed or spaced for safe climbing. A proper access method — a ladder, stair tower, ramp, or integral access frame — must be provided and used instead.

When is scaffold access required?

A safe means of access is required when the scaffold platform is more than 2 feet above or below the point of access. The access must be in place before workers get on the scaffold and must reach the working platform level.

What counts as compliant scaffold access?

Compliant access includes portable, hook-on, or attachable ladders, stair towers, stairway-type ladders, ramps, walkways, or integral prefabricated frames designed for climbing. The access must be positioned and secured so workers can get on and off safely without climbing the structure.

At what height is fall protection required on a scaffold?

Fall protection is required for workers on scaffolds more than 10 feet above a lower level, using guardrails, a personal fall arrest system, or both depending on the scaffold type. Guardrails are the standard control on most supported scaffolds.
