Heat is one of the deadliest and most under-recognized hazards on any job site. Heat exhaustion escalates to heat stroke in minutes, and by the time a worker collapses it is often too late. Water, rest, and shade prevent nearly every case — yet those controls are the first to be missing when a site heats up. What are the warning signs of heat illness?

Early signs include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, headache, and nausea. Warning signs of heat stroke — a medical emergency — include confusion, slurred speech, hot dry skin or stopping sweating, and loss of consciousness. Act immediately at any sign.

Why are new workers most at risk?

Unacclimatized bodies cannot shed heat efficiently. Most outdoor heat deaths occur in a worker's first days on the job. Gradual acclimatization — ramping exposure over several days — is one of the most effective preventive measures.

What are water, rest, and shade requirements?

OSHA's core heat guidance is water, rest, and shade: cool water within easy reach, scheduled rest breaks that increase with the heat index, and shaded areas for cooling. These simple controls prevent the large majority of heat illnesses.
