The pinch points where the belt meets pulleys, rollers, and idlers are among the most dangerous on any floor. What makes conveyors so dangerous?

Conveyors run continuously with strong drawing force at their nip points — where the belt wraps pulleys and idlers. A caught sleeve or glove can pull a worker into a pulley in seconds, causing amputation or death.

Where are the main nip points on a conveyor?

The head, tail, take-up, and snub pulleys, the return idlers underneath, the drive chains and sprockets, and transfer points between conveyors are the primary in-running nip points that must be guarded.

Can I clean or unjam a conveyor while it is running?

No. Cleaning, unjamming, and adjusting tracking on a running conveyor cause a large share of injuries. OSHA requires lockout/tagout (29 CFR 1910.147) so the belt cannot move during the task.

What emergency stops do conveyors require?

Conveyors should have accessible emergency stops — commonly full-length pull cords — so any worker can stop the belt instantly from any point along its length before an incident escalates.
