The pinch points where the belt meets pulleys, rollers, and idlers are among the most dangerous on any floor. - A conveyor hazard is any point on a belt, roller, or chain conveyor where a worker can be caught, drawn in, struck, or crushed. The most dangerous spots are the in-running nip points where the belt wraps a head, tail, or take-up pulley, the return idlers underneath, the drive chains and sprockets, and the transfer points where material — and clothing — can be pulled in.
- On site the hazard shows up as an unguarded tail pulley, an exposed drive at the head, missing side guards along a walkway, no pull-cord or emergency stop within reach, and material spilling at transfer points that tempts workers to reach in while the belt runs. Cleaning, unjamming, and adjusting tracking with the conveyor energized cause a large share of incidents.
- The trap is that a conveyor looks slow and steady, so workers underestimate it. But a belt moving even at a walking pace has enormous drawing force — a caught sleeve or glove pulls an arm into a pulley before anyone can react. That is why a photo-based check for exposed nip points and missing stops before startup is so valuable.
