What is engulfment in a confined space?

Engulfment is being surrounded and captured by a liquid or a flowable solid such as grain, sand, or cement that can suffocate or crush a worker. It is a primary hazard in silos, bins, hoppers, and tanks.

Why is flowing grain so dangerous?

Flowing grain behaves like quicksand. A worker can be helpless in about five seconds and fully submerged in under a minute, and the material's downward pull makes self-rescue impossible once it reaches chest level.

What is a bridged or crusted material hazard?

Stored material can crust over and 'bridge' above an empty pocket. A worker standing on the crust can break through and fall into the void, then be buried as the surrounding material collapses inward.

What does OSHA require before a confined-space entry?

For permit-required spaces, OSHA requires a written permit, atmospheric testing, isolation of engulfment and energy hazards, a trained attendant, and a rescue plan (29 CFR 1926.1204 and 1910.146).
