Engulfment is one of the deadliest confined-space hazards. It is a defining hazard of permit-required confined spaces such as silos, hoppers, bins, tanks, and railcars.
- On site the hazard shows up as a worker standing on top of stored material that may have 'bridged' over an empty pocket, active flow or augers running beneath the surface, sidewall material that can avalanche, or an open hopper with no isolation of the equipment that moves the product. Bypassed permit systems, missing attendants, and no lifeline make a survivable situation fatal.
