Forklifts cause thousands of serious struck-by injuries every year, and many trace back to blind spots created by loads, racking, and tight aisles. A pedestrian stepping into an intersection or standing behind a reversing truck is invisible to the operator until it is too late. Where are a forklift's biggest blind spots?

The largest blind spot is directly in front when carrying a raised or bulky load, followed by the rear during reversing and the areas hidden by the mast and overhead guard. Loads that block the forward view require the operator to travel in reverse or use a spotter.

How do I separate pedestrians from forklifts?

Create marked, barricaded walkways separate from forklift aisles, add pedestrian gates and guardrails at crossings, install mirrors at blind corners, and use signage. Physical separation is the most effective way to prevent struck-by-forklift incidents.

Do forklift operators have to be certified?

Yes. OSHA requires operators to be trained, evaluated, and certified for the specific truck type and workplace before operating a powered industrial truck, with refresher training after incidents or observed unsafe operation.

When must a forklift be driven in reverse?

When a load blocks the forward view, the operator should travel in reverse (except when climbing grades) so they can see the path of travel, or use a spotter. Driving forward with an obstructed view is a leading cause of blind-spot strikes.
